RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
